Only coal tar sealer protects asphalt against the highly damaging effects of fuel oil seepage and all other road chemicals, especially alkalis and winter salt. Sealing prevents water seepage into porous asphalt, stopping damage caused by rain, frost, freezing and thawing. A coal tar coating also inhibits hardening and oxidation, caused by the sun, of your asphalt surface which can break down your asphalt surface.
